Journalist all around the world depend on Twitter’s speed and global-reach to get a story to as many potential readers as possible. Unfortunately for one editor at Destructoid, there are some Tweets you can’t take back.
Ryan Perez, whose Twitter profile picture is shown on the right, was a contributing editor for Destructoid, the writer has also published content with GamePro and Bitmob in the past. The entire incident arose from Perez’s Tweets to cult-favorite actress, writer and producer Felica Day. Using his own personal Twitter account, Perez wrote “Does Felicia Day matter at all? I mean does she actually contribute anything useful to this industry, besides retaining a geek persona?”.
Not stopping there, Perez then began Tweeting directly at Felicia Day, “@feliciaday, I keep seeing everywhere. Question: Do you matter at all? Do you even provide anything useful to gaming, besides ‘personality?’”. The icing on the cake was “@feliciaday, could you be considered nothing more than a glorified booth babe? You don’t seem to add anything creative to the medium”.
It was at this time that fans of Ms. Day alongside readers of Destructoid became outraged on Twitter and began calling for Perez’s termination. Within minutes, Destructoid began trending on Twitter, both from readers appalled by Perez’s words and a few that believed he had the right to do so, since the comments were made on his own personal account.
Regardless of your stance on the subject, Destructoid has decided to part ways with Perez stating on Twitter, “Destructoid has ended its relationship with Ryan Perez, effective immediately. We again apologize to @feliciaday and all others concerned.”
Perez’s apology came in the form of a Tweet stating, “@feliciaday Sorry.”
