  • Sony shows off some impressive PS Vita sales figures with chart

Sony’s PS Vita has been officially launched and the handheld’s game-lineup continues to grow rapidly. With over 1 million units sold in its first week, the PS Vita is on track to be a strong competitor with its mobile gaming-console counterparts.

The graph on the right (posted by the official PS Vita Facebook page) shows were the PS Vita stands in comparison to its competitors in “first week sales”. With 1.1 million units sold in the first week, it stands in last place among the top 4 competitors but as you can see, it’s not by much. Considering the state of the economy compared to other launches, as well as the recent hardships both Sony and Japan have undergone this past year, these sales figures are very impressive.

The DS from Nintendo (the best selling Mobile Game Console) takes the lead, though all platforms recorded have a very close margin. In the first week the Nintendo 3DS for example sold 1.24 million units globally, while the PS Vita sold 1.1 million, a very close race.

Another interesting statistic is the sales by region, with the U.S. and Japan almost selling the same number of units, .30 and .33 (in millions) respectably. The PS Vita actually beat the Nintendo 3DS in Europe, when compared to first-week sales, though it fell just short of beating The Nintendo 3DS in Japan.

It will be interesting to see how the sales figure stack up after this holiday season. It will depend on a strong E3 2012 presentation for both Nintendo and Sony, who have a lot riding on their mobile platforms for the upcoming fiscal year.
