  • Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare, opens up about Mass Effect 3 ending

In an open letter to fans of the ‘Mass Effect’ series, co-founder of Bioware Dr. Muzyka defends his teams artistic expression and fans criticism.

Muzyka (shown on the right) posted his letter to fans on the official Bioware.blog. Muzyka states that it is, “incredibly painful to receive feedback from our core fans that the game’s endings were not up to their expectations” but he still believes “Mass Effect 3 is the best work we’ve yet created”.

Since the release of Mass Effect 3, the reaction to the endings has divided the fan-base. Ranging from high accolades, to outright internet-rage over the ordeal. Even though the game received top-marks from critics (ours included), Muzyka admits that Bioware needs to “to accept the criticism and feedback with humility”.

For fans that are hoping that Bioware will release alternative endings in the form of DLC, there may be some hope. Muzyka states, “This is an issue we care about deeply, and we will respond to it in a fair and timely way. We’re already working hard to do that”. Muzyka stopped short of supplying any details on the fix, or outlining what that may include.

The one point that Muzyka did elaborate on is the extent at which Bioware is listening to its fans, saying that teams are constantly monitoring “industry press, forums, Facebook, and Twitter, just to name a few” looking for feedback and criticism.

Every single spokeperson so far has included the “defense of artistic integrity” in their arguments. That argument is much firmer with traditional media, but videogames have changed the equation. I’m not saying the argument has been completely invalidated; on the contrary, artistic integrity is still as important as ever, but now there are additional concerns. It’s time for the game development industry to ask themselves the following question: are players just audience? [1][1] http://beardseye.blogspot.com/2012/03/are-players-just-audience.html
