Although Konami did confirm that Metal Gear Solid: Rising, which is now Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, would have a story-line following Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, it will not be a direct sequel.
Kojima confirmed the news on its official Japanese twitter account today saying, “We’ve only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At present, we can’t say more than this,â€
It would make more sense for it not to be a direct sequel, since they took the effort to remove SOLID from the title. The game itself has fallen on rough times as late, as Platinum Games had to come in and finish the game.
