Guild Wars 2 toughens up the level scaling in the game

Guild Wars 2 supports ‘level-scaling’ as player’s of the title already know. The entire purpose of the gameplay mechanic is to keep each area of the game challenging, and ultimately still rewarding.

Level-scaling in theory is extremely easy, just cap off each area of the game to a certain level and make the enemies in that area the same level as the cap, but in execution it can be extremely difficult to do.

So in an effort to keep things challenging ArenaNet has altered the dynamic leveling system in the game. If you were one of the early players of he game then odds are you have a character, or a few characters at level 80. Isaiah Cartwright, the lead game designer for Guild Wars 2, stated that developers thought that when “high-level characters played in lower level zones, they were a bit too powerful, so the content was not as challenging as it could be”. To fix that issue the first time, developers toned down the rewards that players could earn in easier zones. After a few weeks of testing however Cartwright felt that the developers “scaled down the rewards a bit too much”.

So to fix the fix, developers have now altered “the formula” for how everything works when you are scaled down in an area. This should make returning to lower level zones “more fun and better balanced” says Cartwright. This will also improve how “rewards are calculated when scaled down” to make it “more rewarding” for high-level players who return to lower level areas.

Cartwright also promises “more content to maps of all levels” in 2013 and that Guild Wars 2 will have a “stronger reward structures for playing across all locations in the world”.
