Fez developers can’t afford to fix bugged patch, Microsoft says old patch is “good enough”

A few weeks ago a patch was released for Polytron’s award winning title ‘Fez’, although it did fix a number of issues with the game, it also caused some saved-game files to become corrupted causing Polytron and Microsoft to pull the update.
Now the developer has gone on recorded saying it is simply too expensive to issue another patch through Microsoft. The developer of the game stated, “microsoft would charge us tens of thousands of dollars to re-certify the game” and that “We’re not going to patch the patch”.
Apparently the saved-game bug only affects “less than a percent of players” making it not cost-effect to issue the patch. It’s like that scene in ‘Fight Club’ when Ed Nortan’s character explains that if that the average cost of a settlement, in a car-crash with a safety defect, is less expensive than a recall then they don’t do one.
Polyton also talks about your chances of running into the bug stating:We believe the save file corruption issue mostly happened to players who had completed, or almost completed the game. If you hadn’t already seen most of what FEZ had to offer, your save file is probably safe. It doesn’t happen if you start a new game.
The patch did fix a lot of errors that were plaguing the game such as, “framerate issues, the loading, the skips, the death loops, everything!” according to the blog post.
The developer also issued an apology to those that were affected by the patch, “To the less-than-1% who are getting screwed, we sincerely apologize. We know this hurts you the most, because you’re the ones who put the most times into the game. And this breaks our hearts. We hope you dont think back on your time spent in FEZ as a total waste”.
Microsoft gave the devs a choice in the matter, they could either re-certify the game, which would cost “a ton of money” according to Polyton and send out a new patch, or Polytron could send out the old patch with the bug. Even with the bug, it’s rare occurrence made it “good enough†for Microsoft to send back to the masses.
