The Resident Evil franchise has scene five lead-installments since 1996 and 19 previous titles. It has become one of the staples in the ‘survivor/horror’ genre and Capcom is gearing up to release its latest game ‘Resident Evil: 6′ this fall.

The story of Resident Evil 6 is set ten years after the Raccoon City incident. After making the decision to reveal the truth behind Raccoon City, the President of the United States becomes infected during a bio-terrorist attack and long-time friend Leon S. Kennedy must kill the transformed president. Meanwhile Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield lands in China to fight against another bioterrorist attack.

As you can imagine by now, Resident Evil 6 will see the return of two previous stars, Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield. Though these two protagonists return, there is an incredibly large cast of characters inbound for this Resident Evil game including; Jake Muller, Helena Harper and BSAA members Piers Nivans and Sherry Birkin, along with many more. All of whom will do battle against the raging ‘C-virus’ spanning from North America to the Eastern European state of Edonia, as well as the Chinese city of Lanshiang. This is a new step in the Resident Evil series, usually players are ‘quelling’ small outbreaks of the disease in specific locations. Resident Evil: 6 will have you jet-setting off to the areas that need you most.

“Resident Evil 6 represents a giant stride forward in the evolution of the series,” commented Katsuhiko Ichii, Head of R&D and Global Marketing. “The development team, led by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, is working tirelessly to deliver the most impressive Resident Evil® title ever both in terms of scope and production values. We are all genuinely excited by the title and cannot wait to share it with the world.”

Derek Simmons, former presidential aide, will be hunting down Leon in the game as well, Leon is still being prosecuted for the death of the President. Ada Wong will also appear, though she still remains a mystery at this point and her true affiliation with the Neo-Umbrella is unknown.

Resident Evil 6 will also ship with a multitude of online and offline content. Along with the single-player campaign, players can also play co-op. One of the most impressive features of the game is the “Crossover Mechanic”. This allows players to join with their friends during “key moments” of the game. You can join up to four friends to “tackle a specific situation, with some stages seeing the usual partnerships swapped to further increase the depth of gameplay” according to a press-statement sent out from Capcom at E3 2012 this year. Capcom has also confirmed that the co-op portion of the title with be playable both “offline or online”. The popular Mercenaries Mode form previous titles will also be featured in the game.

It’s impossible to talk about a Resident Evil game without discussing the monsters. New C-Virus variations will be coming to Resident Evil 6, as well as the return of Zombies. Though the Zombies have learned a thing or two in their absence and can now “run, jump at players and even use weapons, making them far more challenging than in previous games” according to Capcom. J’avo are unique creatures that present special challenges to the player, they have the ability to regenerate and can “mutate” damaged parts of their body as a defense when injured. Chrysalide causes a “full metamorphosis” of monsters that will attack the player. The health bar, weapons, reload speed and other factors of your character will have to be upgraded to take on these terrible atrocities. Capcom has also confirmed certain “Vehicle based action” in which players will find themselves on a variety of machines including; “motorbikes, cars and snowmobiles”.

Capcom also made it clear at E3 that the control system for the game has been updated. Players can now move-and-shoot, slide and even roll in any direction. A cover-bassed system will also allow players to tackle these enemies using strategic cover.

Resident Evil 6 is set to launch on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 2, 2012. The PC edition of the game is currently scheduled for “after” that.
