Bethesda shows off the many UI controls and options of Dishonored
When Arkane Studios designed ‘Dishonored’ the company knew that gaming on a PC requires a completely different set of tools than on consoles. That’s why the developers installed an entireLY new UI for the PC gamer.
On a recent blog post located on the Bethesda blog, the two companies show off a few select screens demonstrating the many customizable interfaces that the player can work with
This goes way beyond your regular ‘gameplay settings’ (shown on the right), many of the options have multiple toggles and switches that not only control your HUD display but many aspects of the game. This is only the tip of the iceberg however, as Bethesda and Arkane Studios explain below. Some of these selections involve multiple options, such as the crosshair style — “Normal,†“Simple†and “Off†— as well as the Health/Mana gauges (“Always On,†“Context Sensitive†and “Offâ€).
Dishonored is often referred to as an “immersive†game, and that can imply a lot of things — everything from a first-person perspective to, say, dynamic sound design. For Arkane, it means a commitment to all aspects of the word, and that involves the user interface.
Below is a look at the game with the interface fully enabled. In the bottom left you’ll notice the stance icon that changes when you are in stealth mode, as well an icon pointing you to the next objective. In the lower right, context-sensitive icons appear when you approach enemies, doors and other objects you can interact with. The top left is reserved for your health and mana status, as well as your currently equipped power or gadget.Bethesda also re-worked the keyboard shortcuts and have multiple settings attached to the UI. It’s a very impressive set-up and one that many PC gamers will appreciate. Consoles were not left out however, many of the settings and choices still are available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 version.
