In video game marketing the options are almost limitless. Players are some of the most connected, internet-savvy consumers on the market, sticking out in a over saturated social-media hub can be difficult however. Bethesda has turned Tumblr into one very successful marketing campaign with their upcoming title ‘Dishonored’.
Tumblr’s usual page destinations are quick, micro-blogs usually filled with an image or two, and limited to a small amount of workable space on each page. Bethesda has hit a social-media goldmine by offering Dishonored’s unique concept art, and terrific gameplay .gifs to the easily shared media stronghold.
No other game has had such a Tumblr experience, Dishonored took up a lot of headlines over the past two-days as Bethesda released the first “gameplay” trailer in preparation for E3 2012. After the wake of the gameplay-trailer, Bethesda’s marketing team is still updating the Tumblr account with gameplay “assassination” .gifs, animated and perfect for gamers that want more of the title.
It’s an encouraging change from the usual (screens-teaser-gameplay-launch trailer) formula that most games go through. Konami is another ‘unusual’ marketer, with Hideo Kojima tweeting ‘behind-the-scenes’ teasers on Twitter (when he isn’t Tweeting sunsets or his daily meal). Lately Konami sent Raiden’s severed arm to several major news sites in an effort to drum up press for Konami’s upcoming ‘Metal Gear Rising’ title. You can watch a new gameplay .gif that hasn’t been uploaded to the Tumblr yet, on their official site.
If you haven’t seen the Tumblr account, we suggest you do. It could be the start of something rather terrific for the video-game marketing community. Until everyone does it, then it’s back to severed-limbs and chocolate Mortal Kombat tokens.

Thanks, now following them. It’s not too surprising that they are trying things out like tumblr considering Rokkan appears to be doing a lot of work for Dishonored. Check out some of the other games they’ve worked on http://rokkan.com/our-work/
*Editing Note; it’s tumblr not tumbler.
