Valve has officially started developing Steam for Linux powered systems and the company is going to begin with their hit title ‘Left 4 Dead 2′. Valve made the announcement on the newly created Valve.Linux blog.
A now dedicated team of developers will be brining Steam to Ubuntu 12.04. As mentioned earlier the first title will be ‘Left for Dead 2′. Valve originally made plans to move to Linux-bassed software two-years ago but no information has been announced until today.
“Steam’d Penguins”, a combination of Valve’s STEAM distribution service and the Penguin logo used by Linux, is the name of the movement. Although Valve is still in the “experimenting” stage, the company feels that Ubuntu is the right decision stating, “Ubuntu is a popular distribution and has recognition with the general gaming and developer communities”. As of right now Steam has three goals outlined (getting the Steam client onto Linux with full functionality, optimizing a version of L4D2 running at a high frame rate with OpenGL and porting additional Valve titles).
Valve has promised to keep the gaming community updated with future titles and features as they are rolled out. You can read the official statement from Valve on the following website.
