  • Square Enix talks about Final Fantasy XIV, coming to PS3 this winter

It’s hard to believe that almost four years ago we started talking about Final Fantasy XIV, back then it was a giant MMORPG coming to PC and PS3. The game flopped when it was finally released in 2010 for PC, and the PS3 version was put on hold. Now with major changes and a new design, the game is getting ready for its PS3 debut.

In a recent blog post by Fabio Santana, PlayStation.Blog Manager in Brazil, Naoki Yoshida talks about the PS3 version of the game. Naoki Yoshida is currently the Director and Producer of the game and is knee-deep in developing the long-awaited 2.0 version of the title. In the blog post it is stated:

(Naoki Yoshida’s) challenge is to helm the 2.0 version of Final Fantasy XIV, which is a re-imagination of the original release. It will mark a new beginning for the game when it gets launched this winter, coinciding with the release of the anticipated PS3 version.

Yoshida talks about the PC version of the game, “Right now it’s optimized for PC. We’re about 50% into the development of the PS3 version, but it’s pretty much how it’s going to look on the console as well,” explains Yoshida. “It uses the same new graphics engine we built just for this game. This summer we’ll have an opportunity to show the PS3 version.”

Yoshida also confirmed that both PC players and PS3 players will share the same “worlds” and be able to interact, just as they did in the previous MMORPG ‘Final Fantasy XI’. Both versions will have the same features though because of this says Yoshida, “Because players that’ll be playing on the PS3 client and on the PC client will all be on the same servers, we can’t give either group something special, because everyone is playing together”.

Though he didn’t go into detail, Yoshida did confirm that there will be a public beta for the 2.0 version. You can read the full interview on the Playstation.blog below.
